How Big is Sports Marketing?

Submitted by Mitch Seigel on Mon, 8/05/2013

In many cases the opportunities through sports marketing are bigger than life itself. It’s what makes the seasons go by so quickly, or in some cases, so slowly. The ‘dog days of summer’ is not just about the heat. Twenty baseball teams are out of the race in their respective divisions, yet they are grinding out the remainder of the season for individual statistics, and to hopefully maintain a position on the team for next year.

Tonight is game number one for pro football’s pre-season. How many eyeballs will be watching this one, following an exciting Super Bowl win by the Ravens over the 49er’s. Is your team in contention? The cool thing about opening day is every team is in contention! And right on the heels of pro football is, arguably, the more exciting college football season, with pre-season rankings announced this week.

It doesn’t stop there, with hockey and basketball beginning before the end of the baseball playoffs. Possibly team sports is not right for your business-how about surfing, the X Games, golf, tennis, etc.? On and on and on…

The time to jump on the bandwagon is now. It will only get bigger going forward. There is more money for the athletes, more media coverage, more advertising, and more ways for your business to grow its clientele.

Start small with one sport and move forward and expand with your success. It could mean sponsoring the local little league team with your company’s name on the backs of the players shirts, all the way through a major sponsorship of a pro team. It’s exciting, it’s fun and it’s profitable.

What are your challenges when it comes to sports marketing? I look forward to hearing your comments. Until next time…
