Public Relations: Are You Relating to the Public?

Submitted by Mitch Seigel on Tues, 2/25/2014

Whether it is because of a positive or negative event and potential story, your company needs to relate to the public. Why? A number of reasons; truth and transparency leads to increased credibility, the public is who keeps you in business-whether it is a person buying from you or a person referring a friend to buy from you, and of course, for the publicity and exposure it brings.

On July 17, 2015 Disneyland in Anaheim will celebrate its 60th they will celebrate by having a birthday party that day, lighting sixty candles, and then call it a day? Without knowing actually what they are going to do, I really doubt that the celebration will last one day. IN fact, my guess is that on July 18th begin-Now THAT’S PR!

What can you do to increase public relations for you or your business? For one, don’t wait until there is a story to tell. You need to start now increasing your relationships in the community. Connect with all the available media in your city and throughout the areas you market your products or services. Second, create a proactive calendar against product launches and releases-times throughout the year that you can promote your “Disneyland!”

Taking a proactive approach to Public Relations is always the winning way to go. You need to be prepared in the event of a scheduled positive event, as well as the unfortunate occurrence of a negative event tied to your business. Your marketing department should be responsible for taking care of PR for the business. If you are too small, hire an outside person and/or agency to do the work for you.

What are your challenges when it comes to public relations? I look forward to hearing your comments. Until next time…
