Strategic Planning

Submitted by Mitch Seigel on Tues, 10/07/2014

I was recently in a meeting where the head of the organization presented the potential opportunities that lie ahead. There were no goals, no tactics and no strategies to work toward the potential opportunities.

At first it struck me funny that an organization was not organized, but then I thought again, and realized that it may be the norm and not the exception. Being visionary is actually the easier part of planning. We all know what we want. But do we know how to get what we want?

Having the vision is a very good start. Then working backwards from there is a very effective way to develop strategies and tactics to carry out the strategies. Measurable items must be included, along with deadlines and due dates, and a tie to stakeholders for each action item.

It is really no different than planning a party. What is the theme of the party? Who can get the decorations and when do we need them so we can decorate the party room in time for the party. Who can take care of the food, and what food do we want that would go along with the theme? Who should be invited to the party and what methods will we use to send out invitations? Etc., Etc.

My thought is that planning is the last thing a team of staff members want to do, while they are so busy with projects due today. Without planning for tomorrow, how will you get there? Interesting thought, isn’t it! While only 16% of people are considered analytical and love being organized, everyone needs to be organized at one time or another. If you can’t do it, hire people to do it for you.

What are your challenges when it comes to strategic planning? I look forward to hearing your comments. Until next time...
